We started to have Soup Week, it must be at least 16 years ago, maybe more.
Our house used to be a prayer house, and one thing we were really wanting to do was to bless people and reach out.
One thing we realised was that financially we didn't have enough, and we needed to think about how to live well so that we had more to share with other people.
And then there's that, quote:
Pray as though everything depended on God;
act as though everything depended on you.
So we started with soup week: how can we live simply for a week and use that money to bless other people?
What did you learn?
What we found out by doing it was it was actually a lot of blessing to us.
We learned maybe how to fast and go without. You know, we are very comfortable and wealthy here. And we learned to go without.
We learned to sit down and share soup with people and have friendship and chat.
We learned that you could just do like a 15 minute bowl of soup. It didn't have to be all night. it wasn't a big investment, but it was an investment.
We learned it was healthy. We had a post Christmas purge with good, healthy soups.
And and we were really blessed.
So we did five nights. We didn't pick which night we were going. We did five and, and learned a bit of dedication as well to, like, push out.
We also learned that maybe by Friday you could have a bit of cheese. That that was all right.
How can I join in?
This year’s Soup Week is going to start on the 22nd of January. It’ll be at our (Sally & Robb’s) house and you can come.
I would encourage you to come every night and just have a bowl of soup and a hunk of bread. But meet a friend, chat with someone, find out how they're doing.
What will I give to?
Then we’re going to put our money that we would have spent on our groceries in a pot, and it's going to go out to the Middle East and it's going to Tearfund to bless people. And if you are reading anything about the Middle East right now, and the believers particularly are struggling, they're having a very difficult time. They're not choosing to have soup. They maybe don't get soup.
So, we can choose to live simply and to bless those other people. But we will be so blessed in that in that time and in that process, So come together.
You can come and just have a If you've only say, well, I can't really give all evening because I'm tired or I just got stuff to do, just come and have the soup and go home. It's fine. That's fine.
Top Tip
We can work with soup. If you get near the end of the pot and there's 10 people, you put water in it. It works. Works fine.
